The U.S. Department of Transportation announced a $996 million grant to the MBTA to expand the Green Line 4.7 miles from East Cambridge to Somerville and Medford. This grant will bring light rail to the most densely populated area of Greater Boston. MASSPIRG’s research and advocacy helped build support for the project and the Green Line Extension would have been dead in the water without the work of the transportation advocacy community. Thanks to the work of many dedicated people, the Commonwealth will be cleaner, healthier and our residents will be able to build an accessible 21st century economy. The Green Line Expansion will particularly transform the city of Somerville, increasing the number of city residents with easy access to mass transit from 15% to 85%.
