Governor Patrick signed the Health Care Cost Control Bill that will begin to rein in aggressive and inappropriate marketing tactics by drug companies and medical device companies. Those excessive marketing tactics have resulted in excessive prescription drug costs and compromised care. Direct-to-physician industry marketing promotes the prescribing of expensive drugs in place of equally safe and effective lower-cost drugs and the prescribing of newer brand name drugs that have the least safety and efficacy information. | |

Consumers Union called on hospitals today to take more aggressive steps to protect patients from Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections in light of a new study showing that the superbug is much more common in hospitals than previous estimates had indicated. | |

Sept. 27, 2007. President Bush today signed the comprehensive Food and Drug Administration bill that focuses on prescription drug safety reforms. The bill holds the prescription drug industry more accountable for the safety of their products by requiring them to publicly disclose drug safety studies, even the ones that show their medicines in an unflattering light. It also increases the budget for drug safety reviews at the Food and Drug Administration. | |

The House today passed significant reforms to the Food and Drug Administration’s drug safety review system. Part of a comprehensive FDA bill, the bill was a compromise between Senate and House legislation that passed overwhelmingly earlier this year. The bill, which includes strong consumer protections, will be voted on in the Senate tomorrow. | |
