This New Year, Celebrate the CFPB | Ed Mierzwinski

This month, we published our 8th report based on analyzing consumer complaints collected in the CFPB's Public Consumer Complaint Database. The release of "Big Banks, Big Overdraft Fees" provides a good year-end opportunity to summarize a few of the reasons to be thankful for the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, which took over in July 2011 as the first federal regulator with just one job: protecting consumers from unfair financial practices. The idea of the CFPB needs no defense, only more defenders.

Federal Trade Commission to America’s used car buyers: Drop Dead.

Consumer and safety organizations blasted the FTC Commissioners’ decision, announced today, to finalize consent orders with GM and the Lithia and Koons auto dealership chains that will allow them to advertise that unrepaired recalled used cars with lethal safety defects are “safe,” have been “repaired for safety,” passed a “rigorous inspection” and qualified to be sold as “certified” cars without repairing the safety defects, if they merely include a meaningless disclosure that the cars “may” be under an  open recall.  In addition, FTC has proposed the same settlement with CarMax and  other dealers.

Bill Introduced in United States Senate to Fight Big Money in Elections

With 2016 candidates already raising record amounts from large donors for their campaigns, U.S. Sen. Richard Durbin introduced legislation today that would give new power to small donors in elections. The Fair Elections Now Act would provide an incentive for more Americans to participate in the electoral process by establishing a $25 “my voice” refundable tax credit. Contributions of less than $150 would be matched with limited public funds at a rate of six-to-one for Senate candidates who agree to turn down big money, amplifying the voices of small donors.

H.1323/S. 867, like the pre-1979 consumer protection act itself, incorrectly assumes that if there is no money lost, there is no injury.  The fact is many consumer wrongs do not result in monetary losses.

In favor of Closing Corporate Tax Loopholes Included in Bill #s 4499 & 3756 | Deirdre Cummings

Whether you support raising or lowering the corporate tax rate, restoring the integrity of our tax system by closing gaps in the rules should not be held hostage to separate issues about the appropriate tax rate. Imagine the uproar if Barry Bonds had told Major League Baseball that he’d be willing to give up steroids if the home run fences were moved in far enough.
