Second Round of Ballot Applications Sent to Voters: Advocates Expect Record Turnout in November

After September’s extremely successful primary election with record turnout, the next round of vote-by-mail ballot applications is due to be mailed to registered voters this week. The September 1 Primary Election saw historic levels of participation: 1.7 million voters - nearly 37 percent of registered Bay Staters - cast ballots, and almost half of those voters participated by mail. The previous high was 1.4 million votes cast in 1994. An online portal to request a ballot is also expected shortly.

Student leaders urge lawmakers to protect student loan borrowers

On behalf of students from 17 colleges across Massachusetts, 50 student leaders are urging state lawmakers to pass a Student Loan Borrowers Bill of Rights. This legislation is included in the economic development bill, An Act Enabling Partnerships for Growth (S.2874, H. 4887) that a six-member Conference Committee in the state legislature is considering.

Statement: Cyclist killed by truck in Harvard Square spotlights need to transform transportation in Massachusetts

A cyclist died after being struck by a tractor-trailer in Harvard Square on Tuesday. This was the area’s sixth cyclist fatality in 2020, and it occurred in nearly the same spot as where a pedestrian was killed by a large truck a year ago. Since the incident, community members and advocates for safer streets and better transportation options have raised their voices, calling for protected bike lanes, traffic restrictions on heavy-duty vehicles, and a redesign of Harvard Square to make the area safer for everyone using the road.
