Consumer, Banking Groups Applaud Bill to Exempt Economic Impact Payments from Garnishment

U.S. PIRG has joined leading consumer and banking organizations to applaud a bi-partisan Senate bill to broaden protections in the recent COVID-19 stimulus package. Under the CARES Act, Congress exempted Economic Impact Payments from offset for debts owed to federal and state agencies, except in the case of child support, but did not exempt them from court-ordered garnishment to pay creditors.

Massachusetts’ “re-opening” should include sustainability measures

Consumer complaints to the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) related to the coronavirus approached 50,000 on Tuesday. U.S. PIRG Education Fund has documented the actions taken by the FTC and 14 other federal agencies in response to coronavirus scams.

MASSPIRG Calls for Passage of Price Gouging Law

MASSPIRG called on the Joint Committee on Consumer Protection and Professional Licensure to pass S. 2652, An Act relative to preventing price gouging during an emergency filed by Senator Bruce Tarr. The bill would codify into law the emergency price gouging regulation, 940, CMR 3:18, that Attorney General Maura Healey issued on 3/20/20.

Bill Would Expand Voting Options to Safeguard Massachusetts’ Fall Elections

Working with a coalition of voting-rights organizations, Rep. Michael Moran, Second Assistant Majority Leader, and Rep. John Lawn, co-chair of the Joint Committee on Election Laws, yesterday filed legislation to boost voting options for this fall’s elections. The legislation is sponsored in the Senate by Senators Eric Lesser and Adam Hinds. Other representatives and senators will be asked to sign onto the bill later today.
