Trouble In Toyland

The 2008 "Trouble In Toyland" report is the 23rd annual Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) survey of toy safety. This report provides safety guidelines for parents when purchasing toys for small children and provides examples of toys currently on store shelves that may pose potential safety hazards. We visited toy stores and other retailers to find potentially dangerous toys and identify trends in toy safety. This year, we focused specifically on toys that contain lead and phthalates in our research.

U.S. House Passes Credit Cardholders’ Bill of Rights

Rep. Carolyn Maloney (NY) bowled a 300 game today, as the House approved her bi-partisan Credit Cardholders' Bill of Rights, HR 5244 by an overwhelming 312-112 vote, with all of the Massachusetts Congressional delegation voting in favor of it.

Vanishing Voters

A new survey of state laws and election officials shows that, on the eve of the 2008 general election, nineteen states do not have laws, regulations or systems in place to properly implement a federally mandated 90-day pre-Election Day ban on systemic voter list purges. The survey, Vanishing Voters, was conducted during the summer of 2008 by the U.S. PIRG Education Fund.
