Marquee Voting Reform Law Gets Public Hearing

BOSTON -- “An Act Fostering Voter Opportunities Trust, Equity, and Security,” better known as the VOTES Act, received widespread support from advocates and lawmakers during a hearing today. The bill, which was lauded by a range of supporters as being a comprehensive and meaningful way to improve elections in Massachusetts, has strong momentum with over 100 cosponsors in the state legislature.

ADVISORY: Public Hearing on Legislation to Improve Massachusetts’ Elections

A major piece of voting reform legislation comes before the Joint Committee on Election Laws at their hearing on Wednesday, May 19 at 1pm. The hearing will include public input on An Act Fostering Voting Opportunities, Trust, Equity and Security or, the VOTES Act (H 805 and S 459) which is supported by over 100 local and state organizations. Bill sponsors, advocates, and election-law experts will testify in support of this landmark legislation, which will make our democracy more accessible and equitable through establishment of mail-in voting, early voting, same-day registration, and more. A Perfect Storm: When tropical storms meet toxic waste


BOSTON--- As “National Hurricane Preparedness Week” kicks off, many communities across the country are still dealing with the devastating effects of last year’s record-shattering hurricane season. To help prepare for this year, USPIRG Education Fund and Environment America Research & Policy Center released a report Thursday highlighting the serious threat posed by toxic “Superfund” waste sites in the paths of hurricanes and tropical storms during the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season.

Lawmakers and public push Whole Foods to put “Planet Over Plastic” at upcoming annual meeting

AUSTIN, Texas --  U.S. PIRG Education Fund , Environment America Research & Policy Center, and Student PIRG sent 59,000 petitions and a letter signed by more than 40 state lawmakers Thursday to Whole Foods urging the company to commit to a comprehensive plan for phasing out single-use plastic packaging from its stores. This follows a March 2021 letter signed by more than 130 advocacy and community groups calling on the national supermarket chain to adopt a bold response to the plastic pollution crisis.
